Why winter works well
The biggest advantage is daytime comfort. Walking dunes, doing a 4x4 circuit or spending longer outside is easier than in peak summer heat. Clear days can feel warm in direct sun, which sometimes surprises travelers who then underestimate how quickly temperatures drop after sunset.

Cold nights are the main issue
Desert temperature swings are real. Once the sun goes down, a camp can become cold quickly, and sunrise is often the chilliest part of the day. Pack a warm layer, socks and something wind-resistant. If you are booking a camp, ask specifically about heating in your tent and common areas.

What to wear
Use layers rather than one heavy item: comfortable base layer, sweater or fleece and jacket. During the day you may remove most of them. Long trousers and closed shoes are practical for camel rides and evening walks. A scarf is useful when wind picks up.

Activities in winter
Camel riding, quad biking, 4x4 tours and walking are all enjoyable because the midday heat is less intense. Start times can be more flexible. For stargazing, the clear cool air can be excellent, but you will enjoy it more if you are dressed warmly enough to stay outside.
Winter road planning
Mountain approaches can occasionally be affected by unusual cold weather or snow at higher elevations, even when Merzouga itself is dry. Keep some flexibility in a long road itinerary and follow current local road information rather than assuming every winter day is identical.
How to fit this into your Merzouga stay
The dunes are most memorable when you experience more than one light condition. Late afternoon, sunset, night and early morning each make Erg Chebbi feel different, so leave some time unplanned.
A practical rule is to combine one signature dune experience with one contrasting activity and one relaxed period. That balance gives better photos, less fatigue and more room for weather or timing changes.
