What is Erg Chebbi?
Erg Chebbi is the large field of wind-shaped sand dunes immediately beside Merzouga. Merzouga is the village and travel base; Erg Chebbi is the landscape. The names are often used interchangeably in tour descriptions, but the distinction helps when you compare hotels, camps and meeting points. You can reach the edge of the dunes directly from the Merzouga area, then continue by camel, 4x4, quad or on foot depending on the experience.

What should you do at Erg Chebbi?
For a first visit, prioritize the dunes at golden hour, then add an experience that gives you a different perspective. A camel ride is slow and scenic, a 4x4 circuit covers the wider desert, and quad biking is more active. Sandboarding is easy to add when conditions are suitable. If you have two nights, combine the dunes with Khamlia, M'Fis, seasonal Dayet Srij and a local lunch rather than repeating the same sunset twice.

Where should you stay?
You can stay in Merzouga or nearby and visit the dunes as an activity, or spend a night in a desert camp. A camp night makes sense if you want dinner, music, stars and sunrise in one experience. Before booking, compare practical details such as private bathroom, hot water, heating or air conditioning, transfer method and whether dinner and breakfast are included. The label “luxury” is less useful than a clear list of facilities.

How much time do you need?
One night can cover the essential camel, sunset, camp and sunrise experience. Two nights are more relaxed and give you a full day for a 4x4 circuit, Khamlia, M'Fis, quad biking or other stops around the dunes. If you are coming from Marrakech or Fes, remember that the road journey is substantial, so the best itinerary balances the travel time with enough time actually in Merzouga.
Best planning advice
Arrive with a flexible schedule around weather and light. The desert looks different every hour, and wind can change how activities feel. Keep a warm layer for evenings outside the hottest months, protect electronics from sand, and use secure footwear. For the most comfortable experience, avoid packing every available activity into a single afternoon.
How to fit this into your Merzouga stay
The dunes are most memorable when you experience more than one light condition. Late afternoon, sunset, night and early morning each make Erg Chebbi feel different, so leave some time unplanned.
A practical rule is to combine one signature dune experience with one contrasting activity and one relaxed period. That balance gives better photos, less fatigue and more room for weather or timing changes.

Is Erg Chebbi the same as Merzouga?
No. Merzouga is the village; Erg Chebbi is the dune field beside it.
Can you walk into Erg Chebbi?
Yes. From parts of Merzouga and nearby villages you can walk directly onto the sand, although longer excursions are better planned with a local guide.
Do you need a 4x4?
Not to reach Merzouga by paved road. A 4x4 is useful for off-road circuits and camp transfers.
Is one night enough?
It is enough for the classic overnight experience. Two nights are better if you want a wider desert discovery day.
When is the best light?
Sunrise and late afternoon give softer temperatures and stronger dune shadows for photography.
