What the ride is actually like
The camels walk in a line at a slow pace while a handler leads the group across the sand. The movement is higher and more rocking than many first-time riders expect, especially when the camel stands up or sits down. Once the caravan is moving, the pace is calm and gives you time to watch the dune shapes rather than rushing across them.
How long should you ride?
For many travelers, around 40–60 minutes is enough for the classic experience. Longer treks exist, but more time is not automatically better if you are not comfortable in the saddle. If your camp is farther away, ask whether the advertised time refers to actual riding time or the complete outing including stops.

Sunset or sunrise?
Sunset is the most popular because it fits naturally with an afternoon arrival and camp check-in. Sunrise is quieter and can give cleaner light, but it requires an early start. If you stay two nights, you can experience both without turning either one into a rushed transfer.

What to wear
Long trousers reduce rubbing against the saddle. Closed shoes or secure sandals are better than loose flip-flops, and a light scarf helps if the wind lifts sand. Bring a layer for the return after sunset in cooler months. Keep phones and cameras secured because dropping them on a moving camel is inconvenient.
If you do not want to ride
A camel ride is not mandatory. Most camps can be reached by 4x4, and that option is useful for travelers with mobility limitations, back discomfort, young children who change their mind, or simply anyone who prefers not to ride animals. You can still enjoy sunset and the camp without missing the main desert atmosphere.
How to fit this into your Merzouga stay
Pair the camel experience with something that feels different: a 4x4 discovery circuit, Khamlia, a relaxed camp evening or a local meal. Keep the camel ride around the best light rather than placing it in the middle of a hot day.
A practical rule is to combine one signature dune experience with one contrasting activity and one relaxed period. That balance gives better photos, less fatigue and more room for weather or timing changes.
