Clothing essentials
Bring lightweight daytime clothing, long trousers for camel rides and at least one warmer layer. In winter, add a proper jacket. In summer, prioritize breathable fabric and sun coverage. A scarf is useful for wind but you do not need to buy special desert clothing before the trip.

Shoes and sand
Closed shoes or secure sandals are the easiest options. Flip-flops are fine around a camp but less useful for climbing dunes, riding camels or walking on uneven tracks. Expect sand to get into everything, so avoid bringing your most delicate shoes.

Phone, camera and power
Use a case or zip bag to keep blowing sand away from lenses and charging ports. Carry a power bank even if the camp has electricity, because sockets may be shared or limited. Back up important photos when you have a good connection rather than waiting until the end of the trip.

Health and comfort
Sunscreen, lip balm, moisturizer, personal medication and a reusable water bottle are practical. If you wear contact lenses, consider glasses as a backup on windy days. Bring tissues or wet wipes for road stops, but do not leave wipes or rubbish in the desert.
What not to overpack
You do not need heavy hiking equipment for a normal Merzouga package. Large hard-shell luggage can stay in the vehicle or accommodation while you take a small overnight bag to camp. Pack what you need for one evening and morning rather than carrying your entire suitcase through the sand.
How to fit this into your Merzouga stay
The dunes are most memorable when you experience more than one light condition. Late afternoon, sunset, night and early morning each make Erg Chebbi feel different, so leave some time unplanned.
A practical rule is to combine one signature dune experience with one contrasting activity and one relaxed period. That balance gives better photos, less fatigue and more room for weather or timing changes.

Logistics vary; a small overnight bag is easier and larger luggage can often stay with the vehicle.
Do camps have electricity?
