Can a normal rental car reach Merzouga?
Yes. The main approach roads to Merzouga are paved, so a standard rental car can reach the village and most hotels near the road. The important distinction is between reaching Merzouga and driving into the desert. Sand, soft tracks and off-road routes around Erg Chebbi require different experience and, in many cases, a suitable 4x4. Do not follow a map app onto an unpaved shortcut just because it appears shorter.

Plan fuel and daylight sensibly
The southeast has proper towns and fuel stations, but distances are longer than in a city break. Start with enough fuel, keep water in the car and avoid making the final unfamiliar stretch late at night if you can arrive during daylight. Mountain and valley roads can be slower than the distance suggests, especially if you stop for viewpoints or encounter road works.

Parking before a desert camp
Camp guests normally receive a meeting point in or near the Merzouga area. You park the rental vehicle in an agreed location and continue to the camp by camel or 4x4. Leave ordinary luggage in the vehicle only when the parking arrangement is secure and supervised; otherwise take what you need or follow the camp team’s instructions. Never attempt to “drive closer” across sand in a normal car.

When a 4x4 is actually useful
A 4x4 is valuable for a desert discovery circuit, M’Fis, remote viewpoints, some nomad areas and rougher seasonal tracks. That does not mean you need to rent one for your entire Morocco trip. Many self-drive travelers arrive in a standard car and book a local 4x4 with a driver for the off-road part, which removes the risk of getting stuck or damaging a rental vehicle.
Navigation and practical habits
Download offline maps before the final leg, keep the accommodation phone number handy and use the exact meeting pin sent by your host rather than searching for a camp name in the dunes. Rental contracts may restrict off-road driving, so check the conditions before leaving paved roads. In strong wind or after unusual weather, local advice is more useful than a route saved months earlier.
How to fit this into your Merzouga stay
Treat the camp as your evening base rather than a checklist item. Arrive with time to settle in, enjoy the light, have dinner without rushing and decide whether sunrise is worth the early start for you.
A practical rule is to combine one signature dune experience with one contrasting activity and one relaxed period. That balance gives better photos, less fatigue and more room for weather or timing changes.
