Why do a 4x4 circuit?
Camel rides and dune walks show you Erg Chebbi from inside the sand. A 4x4 circuit shows how the dunes connect to the wider landscape: black desert, dry plateaus, villages, old mining areas and seasonal wetlands. This makes it especially valuable on a two-night stay because it gives the second day a completely different character.

M'Fis and the desert tracks
M'Fis is one of the classic stops south of the dunes. The scenery is more mineral and open than Erg Chebbi, which helps visitors understand how quickly the landscape changes outside the sand sea. Road conditions can vary, so this is the type of stop that makes more sense with a driver who knows the tracks than by following a map blindly.

Khamlia and local music
Khamlia is known for Gnawa music and is often included as a cultural stop. A respectful visit focuses on the music and local hospitality rather than treating the village as a staged attraction. If you enjoy the performance, buying a drink, a recording or leaving an appropriate contribution supports the musicians.
Nomad areas and local families
Some circuits include a visit with families living in the wider desert area. These visits should feel like a human exchange, not a photo opportunity. Follow your guide’s lead, ask before photographing people and avoid distributing sweets or money to children. Tea and conversation are often the most meaningful part of the stop.
How long should the tour be?
A half-day can cover several key stops. A full day allows a slower pace, lunch and more time at viewpoints. If you also want quad biking, schedule it separately rather than forcing both experiences into one rushed morning.
How to fit this into your Merzouga stay
The dunes are most memorable when you experience more than one light condition. Late afternoon, sunset, night and early morning each make Erg Chebbi feel different, so leave some time unplanned.
A practical rule is to combine one signature dune experience with one contrasting activity and one relaxed period. That balance gives better photos, less fatigue and more room for weather or timing changes.
