Quick answer:Start with a modest slope chosen by the guide, learn how to use the available board and allow time to walk back up. A few comfortable runs are often better than selecting the highest dune.

This guide is about your first attempts, rather than a general list of desert activities. Our main sandboarding guide explains where the experience fits in a Merzouga stay.

Let the guide choose the first slope

Tell the guide if this is your first attempt and look at the board being provided. Sitting and standing formats involve different equipment and instructions; follow the setup demonstrated for that board. Snowboarding experience does not replace an introduction to the sand and local conditions.

Think about the climb back up

There is normally no lift on the dune. The return walk is part of each run and can feel more demanding than the descent. Begin on a lower slope, pause when needed and keep enough energy for the rest of your itinerary. You do not need to climb the tallest dune to enjoy the activity.

Choose comfortable timing and clothing

Plan the session around cooler conditions, usually early or later in the day, rather than exposed summer midday. Wear practical clothing and ask the guide what footwear suits the board and sand that day. Leave loose valuables behind, secure your phone and keep water available.

Fit a few runs into the wider day

Sandboarding pairs well with a sunset stop or camp stay when time and conditions allow. It is included in our standard two-night package, while the one-night package has different inclusions. Confirm the program rather than assuming every camp booking includes boards. Participation is optional; watching from a comfortable spot is also a choice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need snowboarding experience?

No. Explain that you are a beginner and follow the guide's introduction to the available board and chosen slope.

Is there a lift back up the dune?

Normally you walk back up. Choose the slope and number of runs around the effort that feels comfortable.
