The biggest difference is the landscape
Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi, the tall orange dune field most people picture when they imagine Morocco’s Sahara. Zagora is farther west in the Draa Valley region and is better understood as a gateway to a drier, rockier desert landscape with smaller dune areas nearby. That visual difference matters more than hotel category or camp decoration, because it determines what you actually see when you arrive.

Driving time and trip length
Zagora is the shorter desert option from Marrakech, which is why it is commonly sold as a two-day trip. Merzouga requires more driving and deserves at least three days when approached from Marrakech, especially if you want stops along the route rather than a continuous transfer. From Fes, Merzouga is a natural choice because the route is more direct and connects well with a one-way itinerary toward Marrakech.

Which experience feels more complete?
Merzouga offers more variety around the dunes: camel rides, camps, 4x4 circuits, quad biking, Khamlia, M'Fis, seasonal Dayet Srij, Rissani and desert viewpoints. Zagora’s strength is the Draa Valley journey and the ability to fit a desert night into less time. Neither is “wrong”; the better choice depends on whether your priority is the road trip or the dune landscape.

Who should choose Merzouga?
Choose Merzouga if you want the classic Sahara image, want to spend more than one night in the desert area, enjoy photography, or want several different activities around one base. It is also the better fit for travelers entering or leaving via Fes or Errachidia.
Who should choose Zagora?
Choose Zagora when your schedule is very tight and you cannot dedicate enough time to reach Erg Chebbi comfortably. Go with realistic expectations: the value is the southern road, the Draa Valley and the sense of entering Morocco’s pre-Saharan landscapes, not a smaller copy of Merzouga.
How to fit this into your Merzouga stay
The dunes are most memorable when you experience more than one light condition. Late afternoon, sunset, night and early morning each make Erg Chebbi feel different, so leave some time unplanned.
A practical rule is to combine one signature dune experience with one contrasting activity and one relaxed period. That balance gives better photos, less fatigue and more room for weather or timing changes.
